July is Festival Month in the French Quarter

The nation’s premiere showcase for African American musical talent, the Essence Music Festival, returns to the Mercedes-Benz Superdome over the weekend of July 5-8 with a blockbuster lineup, plus an A-list of distinguished speakers on the subjects of empowerment and the African American experience.

The Annual Running of the Bulls through the streets of the French Quarter and downtown New Orleans over the weekend of July 12-15. Set to coincide with the world-famous Encierro (Running of the Bulls) at the San Fermin Festival in Pamplona, Spain, the popularity of the New Orleans event has mushroomed since it was first staged here in 2007. Last year an estimated 10,000 people took part in the run. The main event, the “Encierro,” begins at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 14.

This year’s Tales of the Cocktail, being held from July 25-29, continues its tradition as the world’s premier cocktail festival. Bringing together the world’s most respected minds and talents on mixology for five days of cocktails, cuisine and culture, this international event has something for cocktail professionals and enthusiasts alike. It offers a “spirited” schedule of seminars, dinners, competitions and tasting rooms where world-renowned brands showcase their latest products.

Aziz Ansari has quickly established his presence in the comedy world. He is currently starring in a popular television series, is developing a number of films and will soon debut his second hour-long standup special. The Hollywood Reporter said that he “has become one of the most prolific writers and performers on the comedy scene in recent years” and Rolling Stone recently placed him on the cover of their special comedy issue labeling him “the funniest man under 30.” Aziz brings his unique brand of comedy to the Mahalia Jackson Theater for one night only on June 19th.

Like all of us, from time to time we have the opportunity to visit a venue, enjoy a meal, or witness a “happening” in the Quarter and will share it with you in this spot. As we begin this venture of reporting on our experiences, dining, visiting, viewing, strolling, imbibing, and just being in the French Quarter, we want to make it clear that we are just regular people. We’re not professional wine and cuisine connoisseurs. We are not professional reviewers of performances, we’re just regular people who love the French Quarter and have a few folks that seem to like what we have to present on French Quarter Finder and our Facebook.
